中醫認為，體質並非先天所致，可透過後天的生活、飲食、氣候等而有所改變。有中醫師指出，體質可分為9類，本港受潮濕天氣影響，加上部分人的飲食習慣多以凍、甜為主，故體質以痰濕質為多，提醒這類人士飲食應以清淡為主，忌飲助濕生熱的蜂蜜水及切勿食得過飽。

註冊中醫師何顯妍解釋，中醫對體質分出9大類，包括平和質、陽虛質、陰虛質、濕熱質、氣虛質、痰濕質、瘀血質、氣鬱質及特稟質。特稟質是較罕見的體質，屬遺傳性，即使以飲食調節亦未必有幫助。
